  • Essay / Analysis: Growing up digital, wired for distraction

In Vishal's case, while he got an A in film criticism, his other classes suffered from a D-plus in English and an F in algebra. Technology is taking up all his time and he has postponed all his other classes which are just as important. Students are so busy with their phones and social media that they have put off their schoolwork until high school. For example, Allison Miller's addiction to technology distracted her from her schoolwork. She says, "I'll be reading a book for homework and I'll get a text message, I'll pause my reading, I'll put the book down, I'll resume the text message, and then 20 minutes later I realize, " Oh, I forgot to do my homework.” (p.3) Allison's grades are average up to B, but she can be an A student if she focuses more on her studies. Some teachers disagree with the idea of having technology in the classroom and generally "blame technology for students' difficulty concentrating." (p.7) Finding a balance with technology has proven difficult because most students are too focused on one thing. Schools should limit students' exposure to technology and return to some traditional methods.
