  • Essay / Strengthening the Caste System in the Bhagavad Gita

In the Bhagavad Gita, there are many references to the caste system, or Varnas. It explains how men and women of ancient India should act and behave according to Hinduism. Throughout the book you will find many examples of things Hindus are supposed to do. These tips range from everything from what jobs certain people have to how they are allowed to dress. The Varna is one of the earliest known mentions of a caste system, where the human body is used to represent the structure of Indian society. This caste system emphasizes not only social hierarchy but also interdependence within each distinct caste. The four castes in this system are the Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Sudra. The Brahman, or priestly caste, is represented by the chief; the Kshatriya, the warrior caste, are the weapons; the Vaishya, the traders and landowners, are the legs; and the Sudra caste, the servants of the other castes, are the feet. These different castes come with different responsibilities. The Brahmin gives the highest class, but also has to live according to very strict laws and orders. Brahmins are not allowed to gather their own food or use violence as a means of self-defense. This is just one example of the interdependence of the Varnas: without the other castes, the Brahmins could not survive. Besides Brahman, Kshatriyas also live according to different standards. This caste includes warriors and kings who are believed to be brave and level-headed. This caste is supposed to defend society and ensure the safety of all. While the Vaishya are known for rearing livestock, trading and being involved in agriculture. Finally, there is the Sudra caste. They were only entrusted with the task of serving the other castes through cleaning, leather work, removal...... middle of paper ...... duty. As long as each member is productive and always does their duty, society can remain orderly and free of chaos. In turn, this shows citizens that members of society control the functioning and stability of society. We thus see how the Bhagavad Gita gives importance to social structure and assigns specific tasks to each caste. In conclusion, it can be understood that the caste system had a great impact on the lives of the citizens of ancient India. This was the Indian way of life that they lived by. By fulfilling their own duties, caste members not only helped keep society prosperous through interdependence between castes, but could also achieve eternal peace at the time of death. It is these laws and codes that have helped Hindus journey throughout their lives to attain the eternal soul and know their place in society...
