Essay / Ultrafiltration: the process of water purification
INTRODUCTIONUltrafiltration is a water purification process that can be used to remove particles and macromolecules from raw water to produce water drinkable. They have been used to replace existing secondary (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation) and tertiary (sand filtration and chlorination) filtration systems used in water treatment plants. When treating water with high suspended solids, UF is often integrated into the process, using primary treatments (screening, flocculation and filtration) and some secondary treatments as pretreatment steps. Ultrafiltration processes are currently preferred over traditional treatment methods for the following reasons: • No chemicals required (apart from cleaning) • Consistent product quality regardless of feed quality • Compact plant size • Capable of exceeding regulatory water quality standards, achieving 90-100% pathogen removalCASE STUDYThe ultrafiltration process is currently used at the Twin Oaks Valley Water Treatment Plant, County from San Diego. San Diego County has three million residents who currently receive drinking water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), which treats water at one of its water treatment plants. But growth in the area has outpaced the water district's ability to provide sufficient amounts of water during the summer season. The Twin Oaks Valley Water Treatment Plant helps alleviate any water shortages and also provides a self-sufficient, affordable, high-quality supply that will meet the region's demands. The Zee Weed ultrafiltration system does not require heavy, space-consuming pretreatment systems. such as coagulation and flocculation which are specified in the convent...... middle of paper ...... the untreated water entering the leaves as high quality drinking water and thus ensures the removal of waste and by-products. Disadvantages of Ultra FiltrationUltra filtration processes are limited by the high cost incurred due to membrane fouling and replacement. Additional pretreatment of the feed water is necessary to avoid excessive damage to the membrane units. The water treatment plant is not yet affected by this problem, but pretreatment may be necessary in the near future given the durability of the ultrafiltration membrane. Conclusion The use of an ultrafiltration unit in the San Diego County water treatment plant has helped the county in various ways as noted above. . The water flowing in the river contained a certain amount of solid substances and required a quantity of microbiological particles, which also helped encourage the use of the ultrafiltration process..
