  • Essay / John Forbes Nash Jr. in A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar

Sylvia Nasar writes award-winning book A Beautiful Mind, based on a true story. The book explains how an intelligent individual generates formulated equations from which he creates. He suffers from a disorder called schizophrenia. Nasar talks about how he coped with his disorder that led to his success as well as the events that happened during the process. “Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, disabling brain disorder that has affected people throughout history” (NIMH). This illness can cause people to see things, hear things, or believe that people are plotting to harm them. John Forbes Nash Jr., the mathematical genius, whose story begins in a small town called Bluefield in West Virginia. A brilliant human being, after high school Nash went to Pittsburgh to study chemical engineering. He did not follow the professor's work properly and felt that it was not his calling in life. John wanted to be noticed in a way that people would notice him, by some sort of invention. Later, the young researcher was accepted into the top four mathematics programs at Harvard, Princeton, Chicago and Michigan. He chose Princeton because of how much the university valued him and how much money they gave him. After arriving at Princeton, John Von Neumann seemed to be the star of the mathematics era, Neumann was considered the model of Nash's generation. His years at Princeton led Nash to develop a formula that named him a member of the National Academy of Sciences. The job market was bad at the time after Princeton, but John was still offered a CLE Moore instructor spot by MIT and an instructor spot by Chicago. He moved to Boston and lived in a room in Boston, near MIT. At MIT, he developed an interest in fluid dynamics. While...... middle of paper......I develop schizophrenia. CBT has been reported to help treat psychosis in the past. Thirty-four trials of CBT have been carried out in the public domain. The remainder was used as source data for the meta-analysis and effects on methodology. The results show how beneficial CBT was and how improvements resulted from the therapy. This is something to help patients with schizophrenia and improve them through therapeutic approaches. After reading the text, I believe that Nash's conditions also consisted of paranoid schizophrenia which required him to be preoccupied with one or more delusions of frequent auditory hallucinations. He seems to suffer from some sort of social disorder, as he sometimes has difficulty speaking with others. This story was adapted for cinema. He received an Oscar, won the Golden Globe, BAFTA and many more in three years. (2000-2003).
