I've been dancing since I was 5; it's harder than many think. Learning dance is like learning another language! I know what you're thinking...dance is not a sport, it's an art. The truth is that the definition of sport is “a sporting activity requiring physical skill or prowess and often of a competitive nature” Dictionary.com. Competitive dancing requires at least 10 hours of practice each week, sometimes even more. Do you want to know more about this sport? Dance competitions are divided into categories, age groups, number of children participating in the dance and level. Some of the categories include tap, contemporary, acro, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, open and pointe. Open is a category that includes a mix of other categories such as lyrical/acro. Age divisions include Petite (5-8 years), Junior (9-12 years), Teen (13-15 years), Senior (16-19 years) and Adult (20 years and older). The number of dancers can change the type of dance it is.
