Essay / Why I want to get a Masters in Computer Science
Statement of Purpose I first felt the intense emotion of pride that a creator would feel when their creation works, during my second semester of undergraduate studies cycle, when the wall-following robot I designed and built using simple logic gates worked wonderfully. Digital data from the robot's three sensors provided the robot with enough information about its surroundings to allow it to follow the wall autonomously, without human intervention. Since then, my interest in building intelligent systems has continued through my training, my projects and my professional experiences. This motivated me to apply for a Masters in Computer Science with a specialization in Machine Learning at . The excitement of seeing the robot working perfectly pushed me to study microcontrollers and microprocessors before they were officially introduced to us in the fourth semester, in order to build a Robot based on a microcontroller. This new robot gave me the flexibility to use the same hardware, but experiment with different logic. While programming the robot, after several iterations of coding and flashing the system, I realized the practical benefits of modular programming. I then created modules per device of the microcontroller and used the corresponding module, based on the requirements of the project/problem statement. Using this robot, I participated in several intercollegiate festivals. In the summer of 2009, I joined Project Vyoma, a research project at RVCE aimed at designing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and worked under the guidance of Dr. Ravindra S. Kulkarni. This exposed me to a system that was an order of magnitude more complex than what I had previously worked on. Along with four other members, I created a new Avionics sub-team with the goal of capturing more fl...... middle of paper ...... internal courses and online courses related to the field. These helped me gain knowledge and skills in the basics of Machine Learning, Algorithms, Web and Database technologies. I firmly believe that my undergraduate studies, projects, and work have prepared me well for graduate study in my chosen field, machine learning. Although online courses and my work experience have taught me the fundamental concepts of machine learning, they still do not replace the experience I have gained. I would get to . The unique set of course offerings and research projects will give me the opportunity to learn and gain exposure. I look forward to the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in , and hope to develop my academic abilities, work on interesting problems, and make significant contributions to the knowledge of the world in which we live..
