My majorI chose pre-dentistry. I hope to become an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. It is one of the most competitive fields in dentistry today. With this, I hope to join my father in his practice. There are many courses and degrees that a person must complete before they can become an oral surgeon. I think it would be a challenge. School will be tough, but the rewards will be endless. After college, an oral surgeon must attend dental school and then complete a five-year residency. It's a great career and I think I could make it if I tried hard enough. An oral and maxiofacial surgeon is the person you would contact to extract your wisdom teeth. That's not all they do, most of them are hospital staff, if not several. At the hospital, they work primarily in emergency rooms reconstructing faces from car accidents. Dr Donald Lewis said: “As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon we are called to the emergency room for many types of emergencies, these emergencies can range from facial infections to facial gunshot wounds and facial fractures ". The ability to care for people with the compassion that doctors demonstrate is truly fascinating, considering what they have to go through to get there and what they have to endure once they get there. The stress they face is incredible. When they are in the emergency room, they have to make critical decisions that could be life or death choices and they have to live with them. Then they have to worry about all the illnesses they face on a daily basis. They also have to put up with a patience that simply does not appreciate the care given to them.
