IntroductionThe University of Kentucky is the largest university in Kentucky, with 26,682 students enrolled², it is the largest employer in Lexington³ with more than 10,600 employees, and the ninth largest economic enterprise of Kentucky, with an annual budget of more than $1.4 billion.¹ The human resources department in the United Kingdom has approximately 110 employees.4 I decided to interview the two best human resources specialists: Kimberly P . Wilson, associate vice president of human resources and Mary Ferlan, director of human resources operations. These two women took some time with me to review the University of Kentucky Human Resources department, the Human Resources organizational chart, and answered some questions I had regarding their positions.BackgroundKimberly P. Wilson, associate vice president of human resources, has been with the University of Kentucky since 2002. She began her career in the United Kingdom as a human resources development manager. She was responsible for three training groups: employee development, technology training and operational education. In August 2003, she became Chief of Staff to the Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration, carrying out special projects and assignments as directed. Then, in March 2004, Ms. Wilson became interim director of human resources, responsible for all aspects of HR operations university-wide. Wilson has extensive experience in human resources management. Between 1994 and 2001, she worked for Reuters Group, PLC, holding various HR positions. Her position was that of vice president of human resources. She then became deputy director of human resources, based in London, then director of human resources for the global sales and operations division, based in Switzerland. Before leaving Reuters, she was deputy director and director of strategy and people development in London. Ms. Wilson also served as Director of Human Resources and Vice President of Human Resources for Knight-Ridder, Inc (which owned the Lexington Herald Leader and currently owns the Bradenton Herald in Bradenton, Florida). She holds an MBA from Rockhurst College in Kansas City, MO and a BA from the University of Kentucky. Mary Ferlan, director of human resources operations, has worked at the University of Kentucky since 1990. She began working as a wellness specialist, serving as assistant director and manager of the wellness program. Mary then worked as a HR Generalist and Employee Relations and Unemployment Manager within the UK Human Resources Department. She then became Director of Human Resources Operations.
