Have you ever asked a question or made an educated guess? These are the first steps in the ongoing process of techniques known as the scientific method. The scientific method is used by many scientists to observe the nature of the world and formulate theories. This method includes several steps that involve different forms of reasoning and concludes either with theories or with laws. The steps of the scientific method are simple enough for a scientist, but can be a lengthy process. The very first step in a scientific method is to ask a question. Once a question arises, answers need to be found, which is why research comes next to find data. Once the research has data, they can make a hypothesis, but of course, that's not the end all be all. The hypotheses must then be tested to see if they are true or false. When looking at the end result, if the hypothesis is wrong, asking a question seems so simple, but according to the course e-book, scientists must "collect scientific facts through observation and measurement" ( Tarbuck & Lutgens, 2015, p.33). Through these scientific facts, a question is formulated, leading to the hypothesis. Tarbuck and Lutgens describe that “investigators attempt to explain how or why things happen in the observed way” by formulating a hypothesis (2015, p. 33). Scientists are recommended to propose several hypotheses for their explanations. Once the hypothesis is created, experts begin to examine the predictions by comparing them to nature. If a hypothesis does not pass scrutiny, it is discarded. However, when the hypothesis succeeds, it becomes "a well-tested and widely accepted view that the scientific community agrees on best explains certain observable facts", also known as a scientific theory. (Tarbuck and Lutgens, 2015, p.33). The scientific method is a well thought out process, but once it is completed, every researcher who has been developed experiences success.
