Whether a researcher wishes to achieve an objective or subjective understanding of the issue being studied or otherwise, the truth is that it must be about the things that exist and how they exist. The objectivity or subjectivity of knowledge is based on reality. Ontology is the reality of what exists. It is about questioning what constitutes reality and how individuals could understand its existence. In other words, Foerster (1996) defines ontology as the study or investigation of “what is” and “how it is.” It must be said, ontology concerns the world around us. This is primarily the part of reality that the researcher chooses to address. This involves the question of how society or the world is constructed: “is there a real world, of which we are not aware, which is independent of our knowledge? (Marsh and Furlong 2002, p. 18). From an educational perspective, the question may be: "What is the nature of the social and educational challenge that we can understand?" » (Hay 2002, p. 61). Two key observations can be drawn here: The first observation might be that there is a real world independent of our understanding and that on these foundations communities are built. Second, there is no real world, but the world is socially and expansively constructed and therefore dependent.
