  • Essay / Desirees Baby: Race and racism in Desiree's Baby

They vow to love each other for better or for worse, through thick and thin. They vow to grow old together and enjoy life. If, by chance, children appear during this marriage, they should also be loved and cherished by each parent, regardless of the circumstances. In this story, Armand proposed to Désirée and went on to have a precious baby boy. At first, it seems that Armand really loved Désirée and her little boy; until he later noticed that his little boy was a racial baby. Desiree cried out to the lord to show him this help because first her mother and now her husband claims that her little boy does not belong to her and that she is not white. Deep in her soul, she knew she was definitely white. She even compared the pigmentation of her skin to that of Armand and proved to him that she was much lighter than him. I think Armand was very selfish and showed many signs of racism. It doesn't matter if your child is black, white, blue or purple; it's still your child. One thing that we human beings should always keep in mind is that when children are conceived, they have no idea what is happening and they do not plan to come into this world. That being said, Armand should never have let the color of his son's skin cause him to end his marriage to his son.
