Jacob Fuessel Fuessel 1Mrs. MallonCompositionJanuary 18, 2014How can death, dying and religion differ from person to person? Throughout Tuesdays with Morrie written by Mitch Albom, Morrie discusses his views on death, dying, religion, and how religion can help someone deal with these topics. Morrie's experience with death is often referred to and is a major subject of the novel. Death, which marks the end of life, is different for everyone who experiences it, in part because of their beliefs. Morrie's understanding of religion helps him change his mindset during his horrible times. An individual's view on the subject of death and dying is partially influenced by society's contrasting beliefs. As you read the novel, Morrie talks about his experience with death and everything he did to turn his experience into a positive one. In the chapter “On the Fourth Tuesday We Speak of Death,” Morrie began to elaborate on the final outcome of life. He connected his experience of dying to religion and explains how religion can have such an impact on others in this process. In the novel, Morrie tells Mitch, “The truth is, Mitch, once you learn how to die, you learn how to live. » (Albom 82) In this case, Morrie is not talking specifically about religion and assisted dying, but he is explaining how Morrie lived his last months of life. Morrie learned that he had to overcome the fact that he was going to die so that life would become easier. Morrie tried to teach Mitch that dying is the hardest thing in life and that once you learn how to do it, everything else becomes easy. The second quote from the literary criticism article, YomFuessel 2Kippur with Morrie, by Harold M. Schulweis is indeed talking about religion's aid in dying. Schulwe...... middle of paper ...... their parent, or guardian, or person they look up to. The influence of religion is significant because it gives people a unique approach to death, dying, other religions, and the world. Having a unified approach to religion can prevent a person from living their life and experiencing things that others would tend to do. The influence of religion can be very dangerous, such as religious persecution. But things like religious persecution usually happen when, again, religion is resolute or one only practices one religion. In Morrie's case, religion was helpful because it helped Morrie cope with death and dying. This is because Morrie accepted many different religions into his life and combined them. So yes, religion will differ a person's view on death and dying, but only because people become set in their thinking..
