  • Essay / Reasons given by suffragettes for demanding...

Source A shows an example of a poster of suffragettes protesting for women's votes. The poster illustrates the job opportunities a woman can obtain, without being respected enough to be able to vote. Most of the jobs listed on the poster are jobs that require successful training, such as "doctor or teacher"; or they require a strong and trustworthy person like a “mayor”. The reason suffragists demanded the vote was because they believed that women were capable of many things that required importance, and therefore were fully deserving of the vote. Another reason for wanting women to vote would have to do with how some men might behave. and I always have the honor of voting. The poster mentions how a man can be a "drunkard" and still be allowed to vote. The message expressed here is that men can be much less successful than some women and still be seen as having the right mind to vote, whereas women can achieve most things but still be seen as not having the right mind mind, which is very unfair. The poster could be considered very biased, as the examples shown are very opposite and the fact that men can be successful is not mentioned. Overall, I think the main reason the suffragettes demanded the vote was because they felt that women were very capable of most things that created a good mind, and this point was made clear in the source A. Source B is evidence of a woman who was against women's suffrage. Her argument is that “women were and are destined to make voters rather than to be voters themselves.” By this she means that the role of women is to produce children, then to influence them on the choice of voters. She also states that she thinks the suffragette campaign was a "shrill cry" of "disco...... middle of paper ......ng of the suffragettes after their much more pacifist approach to the war. This perhaps suggests that if the war had not happened, Asquith would not have changed his mind about the situation, otherwise the suffragettes would have continued to act violently. There were also many other reasons why women gained the right to vote in 1918. The fact that Prime Minister David Lloyd George was in favor of women's suffrage would have convinced many people. If the Prime Minister supported women, then their name was very important in persuading others to follow his lead. In conclusion, I disagree with the statement in the question, as women obviously tried in various ways to ensure they could get the vote. The war was undoubtedly a stepping stone toward the end goal of women's suffrage, but it was not the only reason..
