  • Essay / The Truth About Stories - 2174

In “The Truth About Stories,” Thomas King demonstrates the connection between Indigenous storytelling and the authentic world. It examines various themes in the stories such as: oppression, racism, identity and discrimination. It uses creation stories and engages today's world and highlights issues of racism and identity that indigenous people have gone through and are still going through. The environment shapes the lives of individuals and a story plays a vital role. The way a story is told has a huge impact on listeners and readers. King uses a sarcastic tone when recounting current Native stories and his experiences. It highlights events and incidents such as the government's apology for colonialism, but the words remain as they are and are not exchanged for actions. King continually alerts the reader to the need to take action toward change because people tend to ignore what is happening around them. In the end, people give a simple reason why they weren't aware of it. Thus, the author constantly reminds readers that they are now aware of the issue and therefore have no reason to be ignorant. King begins with two different creation stories, one indigenous and the other Judeo-Christian. The indigenous story begins with a woman called Charm, her two twin children and the animals who cooperate well together without any dilemma. She comes from another planet and is curious about everything she sees. Finally, one day, she sticks her head into the earth and continues until she reaches the other end. She has two children, one of whom created the “sun” and the other the “shadows”. When the right-handed child created "summer", the left-handed child created "winter", and the two continued to construct the two...... middle of paper...... e or cold war between each other. Even at the macro level, major problems can arise at the political level. The current example would be that of September 11. An incident happened and many stories were written. The stories themselves led to violations and racism from one group to another, and further created more problems. One group is always oppressed by another, opposed by another, and so on. People act and violate each other without knowing the history. If such incidents took place, there must be a reason that can be understood through history. It is important to highlight social issues in every possible form, whether orally or in writing. We have history books and oral speeches from the past that allow us to acquire information. However, whatever form is used, the words used to tell the story are more important..
