  • Essay / P2p Case Study - 736

Global music industry revenues have been reduced by 50% over the last 20 years, regarding piracy, illegal file sharing, legal downloading such as iTunes service and streaming services (McDoling, 2015). Overall, the Internet could be the music industry's biggest problem if the music industry didn't know how to deal with it. P2P is part of the problem, as it has caused a sharp decline in music sales. However, it appears that the music industry has scored a big victory in the United States when it comes to file sharing. Comparing the number of IP address accounts targeted for prosecution at 43,124 ISPs in 2010 to 6,700 IPs in 2015, we conclude a remarkable decrease in music piracy (A, 2016). The current cooperation between the music industry and new music streaming services (Spotify), which allow legal and cheap access to copyright-protected music, heralds a new music sector.
