This mistreatment includes the use of restraints, poor health conditions, sexual abuse by prison officers and the isolation of women contained in high security units. Perhaps the most alarming part of this report is that the United States agreed to an international treaty that was accepted by one hundred and forty-five countries that are currently legally bound by said treaty, but only to the extent that what was already indicated in the report. Constitution and no more than that. Women in American prisons are victims of rape and various forms of sexual abuse at the hands of prison staff. Additionally, as noted in Jill's story, the law unduly and unfairly requires that sick or pregnant women be shackled during childbirth for safety reasons. This enslavement of pregnant women constitutes a total violation of the fundamental human rights of incarcerated women. The final topic covered in this report was the fact that most prisons, particularly maximum security prisons, are developed and cater to men and their specific gender issues. The situation has only recently started to improve, but conditions remain scandalous and some of the high-risk units within prisons violate the fundamental right to privacy and dignity by allowing male guards to see these women at any time, without any privacy.
