I don't know about you, but some of my favorite gifts are those that are made especially for me. It could be my name engraved on a piece of jewelry or a calendar filled with family photos. Quite simply, these items are the most expensive because they were carefully thought out for me. The field of precision medicine is simplistic in spirit, but the technology to deliver this medicine is extremely complex. With each passing year, the ability to identify the problem and refine treatments evolves at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, for many people suffering from chronic or life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, the pace of science cannot move fast enough. The benefits of precision medicine, the three technologies that enable precision medicine, and the field of personalized medicine will be discussed. Precision Medicine According to Christensen, Grossman, and Hwang (2009), precision medicine is part of a continuum and constitutes “the delivery of care.” for diseases that can be accurately diagnosed, whose causes are understood, and which can therefore be treated with rule-based and predicatively effective therapies” (p. 44). It takes years of research and trial and error to get to this point, but it's a destination worth visiting. Precision medicine has several benefits and these benefits can be seen across all healthcare organizations. It's hard to argue that saving time, money and lives isn't a very good thing. First, patients and providers can save time by moving quickly from diagnosis to treatment with the highest probability of success (Christensen et al., 2009).
