  • Essay / Is technology harmful to society? - 705

The more advanced technology is, the more harmful consequences it has on our daily lives. Lee Siegel states that “we shop, work, play, love, seek information, seek to communicate with each other and sometimes with the online world. We spend more time online than ever. Yet people are not discussing this surprising new situation. » I believe that because of the control technology has taken over society, technology is ultimately detrimental to society as a whole. As you stare at a screen for hours on end, you begin to stop “thinking” and get lost in the world of television, the internet, or whatever you use your technology to do. Siegel calls this lack of reflection the “placeless place” of the mind. Due to lack of thinking and brain stimulation, the intelligence of society decreases. On average, children aged 8 to 18 spend 7.5 hours per day in front of a screen, a record with the inclusion of multitasking with other devices such as. cell phones, they spend about 11 hours a day. That's more than the time school-aged children spend in school on a given day. As a result, the heaviest screen users report feelings of boredom and depression, as well as family. school and social problems. Yet somehow we, as a society, accept this amount of technology use despite all the consequences that come from high usage. Instead of spending their time acquiring knowledge and developing as individuals, children spend an inordinate amount of time in their “placeless place,” which can be very detrimental not only to their social lives, but also to their their grades. In fact, there is evidence that children who spend too much time end up...... middle of paper... Needs. In fact, because of technology, we cannot meet all our needs. With the ability to simply text someone whenever you need to, you lose the interpersonal connection that communication brings. Our needs are not an acceptable compromise for the conveniences of modern technology. Since the beginning of our era, society has tried to find ways to make our lives more fluid. This was accompanied by technological advancements such as the cell phone, laptop, and even tablets. Unfortunately, this progress comes at a cost. Constant use of technology leads to a lack of brain stimulation and ultimately lower intelligence, as well as resourcefulness in communicating with others and fewer needs met. The use of technology has ultimately been detrimental and will continue to be so as long as it remains a priority in our society.
