  • Essay / Why Men Are the Way They Are by Warren Farrell

Warren Farrell was born in 1943 and became an American educator and author of seven books on men's and women's issues. In the 1960s he began researching gender issues and mainly focused on the feminist perspective, but by the 1980s he believed that men were poorly represented. In the 1990s this sentiment began to grow and although his book Why Men are the way They Are (published in the 1980s) was an award-winning bestseller, he published The Myth of Male Power to confront the erroneous interpretations of men. He is the only man to have been elected three times to the Governing Council of the National Women's Organization of New York, and his books are published in more than 50 countries and in 15 languages. Farrell's other book, Why Men Earn More: the Startling Truth Behind the Pay Gap - and What Women can Do about it, was selected by US News and World Report in 2006 as one of the four best career books . Warren has appeared on more than 1,000 television and radio shows and has been frequently interviewed by Oprah and Barbara, as well as Larry King and Peter Jennings. Farrell said that for all his accomplishments, "his best times are at home" in Mill Valley, Calif., with his wife Liz and two daughters. Why do men earn more than women? Men work longer hours in more dangerous and unpleasant jobs. They accept night shifts and the risks of the job more easily. Women librarians earn less than garbage collectors, not because of discrimination, but because many applicants aspire to the innocuous, fresh, relaxed and convenient job that women prefer. Men earn in-demand engineering degrees, while women earn degrees in French literature. Warren Farrell insists that both women and men have a lot of paper and believe it would not be an easy task to get these and similar jobs. I completely agree though that rather than demeaning men for earning more, we should admire them for their willingness to do hostile but necessary work that few women do, like roofing, coal miner and prison guard, often ending up in an early grave. • Farrell, Warren.
