Edith Wharton was the author of The Age of Innocence, a novel published in 1920. In the book, many topics were discussed, such as divorce, women empowerment and the lifestyle of the rich. The inspiration for these designs occurred throughout his life. Although Edith Wharton's work was not well received, the topics covered in her writings contained many truths about upper-class society of the late 1800s; therefore, Edith Wharton was influenced by her past and societal experiences. Wharton received inspiration for her writing through her education. Edith Wharton lived in affluent New York, which is the setting for her novel The Age of Innocence. “But I am improvident: I live in the moment when I am happy” (Wharton 87). This quote shows the mindset of most residents of old New York. Because they were forced to hide their true emotions, when they were sincerely happy, they focused only on the happiness in their lives.
