    That said, the cultural environment in which one lives is what shapes each individual in a unique way (Rew, 2014). The elements of the cultural environment that have an impact on our opinions and behaviors are: ideas, beliefs, values, religious costumes and traditions. Ultimately, culturally congruent care is only possible when patient care successfully integrates cultural values, expressions, and models that meet patients' needs (Alligood, 2014; Sitzman and Eichelberger, 2015). As nurses are patient advocates, it is essential that they are aware and able to recognize the unique needs specific to each patient (Rew, 2015). Nevertheless, nurses must understand that there are differences and similarities between cultures that are often not obvious to outsiders.
