    The ability of family members to effectively express their emotions, thoughts, and ideas to each other reflects the quality of relationships among members and the functioning of the family as a whole. According to Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2012), assessing communication patterns within a family is crucial to the process of planned change that must occur in order to help families resolve their problems in the best possible way (p. 331).
