  • Essay / Cameras in court: is it really against our rights?

    Americans are a group of people who tend to be very concerned about their rights, particularly those set forth in the Constitution's Bill of Rights. However, it appears that new technologies are creating situations where certain rights come into conflict with each other. This new technology is the video camera. In most situations, a camera, or its use, will not infringe on a person's rights. However, people have pointed out that the presence of cameras in a courtroom can undermine the right to a fair trial by distracting and affecting everyone in the courtroom. The solution to this problem now seems obvious; ban court cameras. However, this infringes on another fundamental right afforded to American citizens; freedom of the press. American citizens have the right to document and publish almost anything. Banning cameras in courtrooms may diminish a person's ability to accurately document a legal proceeding. So what can we do about it? The only solution that seems right to me is to film a legal proceeding in its entirety and then publish it in its entirety, without editing.....
