  • Essay / Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream Speech

Martin Luther King Jr. was introduced on that hot August day as the "moral leader of the nation." In this capacity, he played a key role in the civil rights movement. His “I Have a Dream” speech ensured that it would stay that way because of its powerful impact. There are three broad categories of reasons why it is considered one of the greatest speeches of all time. The first area is historical; the second concerns the technical aspects of the speech itself; while the last reason is spiritual. It is often said that winners write the history books. In this case, key elements of Dr. King's demands for satisfaction came to fruition very quickly and did not need to wait for "progressivism." Segregation laws were abolished. Universal suffrage has become a reality. Police brutality has been significantly reduced. If Dr. King had been shot and those who shared his dream had been disbursed, the speech would have been forgotten along with his dreams. One key area that Dr. King demanded as a key point that seems to have been ignored was his final demand from Amos 5:24 that "righteousness (rolls) like a mighty stream." This seems a more distant dream today than in 1963. Despite this failure to achieve justice, the fact that his speech actually helped bring about real change for most of his demands for justice is fundamental to 'it be considered a dream. one of the greatest speeches of all time. Mark Sanborn cited in Servant Empowered Leadership (Page, p. 162) summarizes what an effective communicator must do: “create through his communication a cascading vision that diffuses outward to energize all members of the organization ". History shows that his speech actually accomplished this goal. Simply put, it worked. Aside... middle of paper ...... taken from the master communicator, the Holy Spirit. Jesus himself said that he had come to set the captives free. Following the clear truths of God's desire for all captives to be set free from injustice, I believe the Holy Spirit inspired King when he wrote. God wanted justice, and he used King to achieve it. I pray that one day King's dream of seeing justice spread across America may also one day come true. King's speech was truly great because history proved his worth. The technical elements of the entire speech, from the opening statements to the final vision, were masterfully crafted. There was also the full weight of God's passion for justice flowing behind him like rivers. These three elements combined ensure that the King's "I Have a Dream" Speech will continue to be considered one of the greatest speeches in history of all time..
