Essay / The media is a powerful actor in terrorism - 3094
INTRODUCTIONThe media is a powerful actor in terrorism. The importance of the media during terrorist incidents is the subject of constant debate (Atwater, 1987; Jenkins, 2003). Understanding the links between terrorism and the media must go through a broader analysis: the power of the media (Shaw and McCombs, 1972), particularly in difficult situations (Arno, 1984); the way journalists, editors, authorities and terrorists interact with each other; empirically analyze the media; and the link between terrorism and public opinion. Since the early 1970s, researchers have examined the role of the news media in relation to terrorism and uncovered how the media interacts with terrorists. THE TERRORIST AND THE USE OF THE MEDIA Many terrorist groups or organizations are very aware and able to understand the feelings of others regarding the timing of reporting and audience dynamics, and they then structure their actions accordingly (Weimann and Winn, 1994 ). Several examples include; the Westgate bombing in Kenya, the 1974 kidnapping of Patricia Hearst by members of the Symbionese Liberation Army, the 1977 suicide of the Baader-Meinhof gang in Stammheim prison, and the kidnapping of Prime Minister Italian minister Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades, in 1983 Armenian. Attack by the revolutionary army on the Turkish ambassador in Lisbon, bombing of the Grand Hotel in Brighton in 1984 by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (Poland, 1988), kidnapping of Israeli athletes in 1972 during the Games 1972 Olympics in Munich, where members of Black September realized that the world's major media organizations would be present at the event and decided to use the incident to attract attention.
