They taught black people around the world to defend themselves, whether through direct, nonviolent civil action, or through separatist self-defense. They taught that the most important element was self-respect or self-love. Perhaps if Martin and Malcolm had put aside their differences, they could have combined the strengths of their two philosophies and united to gain a surer force against white society. That's exactly what they started doing at the end of their leadership careers, but unfortunately someone took matters into their own hands to ensure that unity between the two men would never happen.
