Essay / Attractive or Unattractive - 779
There are many aspects about individuals that make them attractive or unattractive to others. Similarity in values, beliefs, needs, and personality, as well as physical attractiveness, are among the most common attractive characteristics (Woodall, Burgoon, & Markel, 1980). However, upon first meeting, especially in public places, there are often few revelations between individuals. First impressions made here lead individuals to form expectations about future encounters and thus affect the nature of subsequent social interactions (Riggio and Friedman, 1985). Research has examined aspects of attraction in the preferred gender (Feinman & Gill, 1977), suggesting that men find light hair and eyes more attractive in women. Conversely, they found that women prefer dark hair and eyes to men (Feinman and Gill, 1977). Because the face is the primary object of interpersonal communication (Riggio & Friedman, 1985), we were led to wonder whether the type of smile a person exhibits would influence attraction toward the opposite or preferred sex. The eyes are the primary region of the face that shows differences between genuine and forced smiles (Frank, Ekman, & Friesen, 1982). Based on this study and studies of facial behavior by French anatomist GB Duchenne, two main muscle groups illustrate the distinction between genuine and inauthentic smiles. Forced or posed smiles activate the zygomaticus major, the muscle that primarily controls the cheeks, while genuine smiles are also said to cause contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle that surrounds the eye (Boraston, Corden, Miles, Skuse and Blakemore, 2007). ). Additionally, the outer portion of the orbicularis oculi, which causes twisting of the skin outside the eye...... middle of paper ......male participants found men in red shirt significantly more attractive than the same men in white shirts. Additionally, when asked, study participants said they did not know the nature or purpose of the experiment, suggesting that color has the power to influence opinions on an unconscious level. A similar study showed that red, as the color of sex and romance, enhanced women's attractiveness (Elliot and Niesta, 2008). Men in this study rated women in red higher in terms of perceived physical attractiveness and sexual attraction, which includes both initial attraction and potential romantic interest. Our research aims to explore the effects of smile type and background color on attraction. Based on available research and theories, we hypothesize that models with real smiles and a red background will be perceived and evaluated as more attractive..
