The meaning of touch for men and women is different, it depends on factors such as interpersonal relationships, comfort and respect and is not based on any cultural differences . Heslin, 1983 found that for women, the meaning of touch is primarily influenced by how they know the other person; whereas for men, meaning is primarily determined by the sex of the other person. For example, my practitioner first made me feel comfortable, established trust, and then began practicing therapeutic techniques. I was very conscious, first of taking my top off, then of being touched by a strange person. Heslin, 1983, suggested that women displayed a marked lack of enthusiasm for touching from a strange man. I agree with this statement: When we were asked to choose partners in class, I was very shy and concerned about choosing a man as my partner. I would never have been comfortable working with a man in a therapeutic touch class. A lot of this comes from my culture, which views women's bodies as more vulnerable and sensitive than men's.
