Essay / LGBT Rights and Human Rights - 2212
LGBT RightsBackground: Since times BCE, homosexuality has been depicted in Roman culture through paintings or statues of homosexual acts. The predominant religions in the world are Christianity, Islam and Judaism. These religions have deep roots in countries around the world. These religions strongly advocate heterosexual marriage and condemn homosexuality because it is considered a sin. People involved in same-sex relationships have been persecuted for centuries and beaten, tortured and even murdered. Since then, there are now 13 international LGBT rights organizations and movements, with more than 100 movements combined from countries around the world. The largest of these organizations is the Human Rights Campaign. Even though many countries have accepted LGBT rights, many still condemn homosexuality and continue to persecute these people. Predominantly African and Middle Eastern countries, due to their religious views, strongly oppose same-sex marriage. More than 55 percent of LGBT people showed in a survey that they were afraid of being victims of hate crimes. The problem LGBT people face is that they do not feel comfortable confiding their sexuality in others, for fear of being discriminated against, beaten, imprisoned or killed. This causes many LGBT people to isolate themselves and hide their sexuality from their families. UN Involvement: The United Nations has taken strong action to end hate crimes and the unequal rights of LGBT people. The very foundation of human rights states that “all people are born free in dignity and in their natural rights.” The United Nations attempted to place this clause in the middle of the paper...."
