  • Essay / Sociology and social sciences - 1017

Christaki (2013) asserts that the social sciences have stagnated. Likewise, he comments that "they are not only boring but also counterproductive, limiting engagement at the cutting edge of science and stifling the creation of new and useful knowledge." The study of social sciences has not become stagnant as new social issues are regularly integrated into course modules to keep knowledge up to date and reliable. If social science degrees were not considered useful information, human understanding of society and the relationships between individuals within a society would be non-existent. No one would know why people may or may not be programmed to commit crimes or why the primary socialization of children from an early age is important. Many people wonder what is sociology for and why should anyone care about it. Self-awakening and better self-understanding can be achieved through sociological reflection. This raises awareness of culture and diversity and that there is not just one type of society. The social sciences are not considered reliable or as academically stimulating as the natural sciences. But as Goodall and Oswald point out, "what matters most is whether social scientists are doing their job, which is to help humans understand the world and improve lives."
