  • Essay / Analysis of the play “Seven Guitars” - 1351

It is a two-story house made of red brick; the stairs access the top floor and each floor has a single window overlooking the courtyard; It’s a house I’ll pass by every day. As a foreigner from another country, I never worried about what would happen in those red brick houses half a century ago. However, the play Seven Guitars depicts a bitter story set in the red brick house in Pittsburgh. In the story, someone was the victim of blatant discrimination; someone betrayed their morality by pursuing their dream; someone killed their “friend” for money; someone lost her lover right after she decided to leave with him; someone hid a secret; someone has unraveled the mystery of a death, and someone has just witnessed all of these things that happened. So, seven guitars refer to seven characters illustrating the life of African-Americans in the 1940s in Pittsburgh, the place where I live today. The storyline was expanded by Louise's dirty song, as they returned from Floyd's funeral, which makes I wonder why the author - August Wilson makes the characters act so calm that Louise is always in the mood to sing and Red and Canewell bicker over a piece of pie after experiencing the loss of their close friend. Except Vera, who is Floyd's lover, asks the others if they saw six angels take Floyd to heaven, the rest of the characters ask Vera for beers and talk about letting the same reverend who appears at Floyd's funeral preach also their funerals in a relaxed tone. Why do they act like nothing happened? Are they trying to hide their sadness or are they used to dealing with the loss of their friend? These questions occupied my mind, as... middle of paper ......r, when Floyd and Hedley had both found the money that allowed them to achieve their dreams, Floyd had drawn his gun toward Canewell, and Hedley waved the machete and ultimately killed Floyd. As Floyd falls on stage, my heart is torn, resonating with the miserable lives of African Americans in 1940s Pittsburgh. I saw how people struggle with their unjust and assigned destiny and how brutal reality shatters their dreams and their humanity; I saw that there was a group of people singing, dreaming, fighting, loving and dying in the red brick house that I could pass by every day, all in this masterpiece by August Wilson. It is always difficult to reopen the grave wound of the dark period of American history; However, the harmful character would be the most effective way to force people to think about the consequences of the story..
