Essay / Relax Me: Conner's Conflict - 696
The main conflict that Connor was afflicted with is that of society wanting to get rid of the "problem child" by unraveling him. Besides Ariana-Connor's girlfriend Sonia and the Admiral, everyone wants Connor dead due to his intolerable behavior, leading to conflict between man and society. For example, Ariana's parents express their disapproval of Connor by saying, "We always knew he would be a Regulator, you should have stayed away from that Lassiter boy" (Shusterman 5). Connor only had two options. He could have run away from Juvey's cops, his parents, and the reality that he would probably end up released or he had the chance to give society what it wanted by giving them exactly what they wanted; have one less problem in the world. Clearly, Connor faced his conflict head on and decided that he was going to overcome anything to stay alive. This deep societal desire to get rid of Connor quickly grew as the narrator recalls, "Connor makes a split-second decision and runs away, pushing the officer against the truck and speeding across the busy highway. ยป (Shusterman 18). Connor's action of assaulting an officer and quickly escaping caused the Juvey cops to view him as a threat and want to try even harder to free him. Most often people don't recognize it, but every element of their atmosphere leaves a big impact on them. At the beginning of the novel, Connor begins to feel remorse before his plan of action to escape has even begun. He uses his knowledge as a weapon to make... middle of paper...... the solution. Her logic was that if she didn't need to see me every day, then she wouldn't be reminded of her past and her life would be better. In an attempt to make her life less stressful, she contacted my father and offered to move to Texas with him, not because of anything I had done, but rather because of factors I could not not control who have created a nuisance in his life that could so easily be taken care of by my flight. As mean as it may sound, my own father saying he didn't have enough time, money or space for me, was a relief to me because of the fear I still carry within me against him, but that meant having to continue. put up with my mother's mistreatment. Just as with Connor, the choices of running away or being released seem both undesirable and unpredictable, I know that my conflicts too must be faced in order to continue moving forward in life..
