Affirmative action has been considered an effective tool to rectify the inequities of racism in our country's past. This is a set of procedures intended to eliminate discrimination against a candidate based on their ethnic origin. President John F. Kennedy first introduced the concept "across the United States with his Executive Order Number 10925" and "in 1978, the Supreme Court ruled that race could be used as a criterion for admission" ( Wilcher). The use of race is a “positive factor” for minority races, but it has become a disadvantage for Asian American students who demonstrate academic excellence. Their achievements are often overlooked due to their racial background (Bronner). Although affirmative action was created to prevent discrimination against minorities in the United States, Asians are instead deprived of their fair chance of being accepted into college. These policies claim to help the disadvantaged, but if “preferences were truly intended to address disadvantage, they would be granted on the basis of disadvantage, not on the basis of race” (Sacks and Thiel). Because affirmative action is deceptive and deprives students of a fair opportunity for college admission, it should not be considered in college admissions decisions. Although there is diversity in the United States, there is also a mixture of cultures as well as a sense of unity that exists among different ethnic groups; This doesn't mean that everyone is in harmony with each other, but in general, the mixture of cultures makes America truly unique. This country is made up of immigrants from all parts of the world and they tend to have extremely low incomes and lack educational opportunities.
