The 2007 film Across the Universe, set in the late 1960s, depicts how American society was affected by the Vietnam War. The film uses the music of The Beatles which also depicts the revolutionary feeling of the times. The film follows a group of around twenty people, each affected differently by the changing times. The film depicts the Detroit Riots, the draft Vietnam War, the Vietnam Peace Parade on Fifth Avenue, and the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. In the film, it depicts the 1967 Detroit Riots which erupted in July of that summer due to racial tensions in the country. In the film, they show the city on fire, people running for their lives, and a little boy singing amidst all the chaos. On the Sunday of the riot, crowds began fighting back against police brutality and the city erupted into total chaos with break-ins as well as fires.
