2.0 Results2.1 Literature ReviewOrganizing an international sporting event can bring many benefits as well as negative results to the host country. However, it depends on the audience as many people have different opinions on such an event. This section covers previous studies on the organization of an international sporting event which are examined to provide the necessary information for the three research questions which have been established in this research conducted.2.1.1 What are the public views on the Olympic Games?2.1.2 What are the advantages and disadvantages of hosting the Olympic Games in Malaysia?2.1.3 What will be the impact of the Olympic Games on the economy and the well-being of citizens?2.1.1 Opinion public about the Olympics After the 2012 London Olympics, Sports Minister Hugh (quoted in BBC 2013) mentions that even after the Olympics ended, people outside of England could still remember the events and would congratulate themselves on having organized the best Olympic event. Olympic Legacy Ambassador Lord Coe added that the recovery of the economy was undoubtedly remarkable and that a survey of the Games after the event showed good results (BBC 2013). Before designating the country that would host the Olympic Games, Japan was chosen. to host the 2020 Olympics. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe proudly said that such an event could unite people and was like a celebration offering dreams and hope. Furthermore, he also wants to give back to the world for helping Japan after the 2011 earthquake by organizing a safer Olympic event (CNN Staff 2013). In Rio, Gomes (cited in Smale 2012), agreed that the citizens of Brazil became more attracted to the Olympics after the 2012 Olympics in London. She concluded that, according to the public, Rio would not be... middle of paper... and that it provides employment opportunities for local residents (C Phang 2013, interview, October 11).2.3.3 Disadvantages of Hosting the Olympics However, these jobs are only short term and will last for the duration of the Olympic event. She mentions that Malaysia is not up to par when it comes to athletics and that sports facilities should be supported and maintained otherwise they may no longer benefit the country. One of the downsides that Miss Cynthia agreed on is the likelihood of problems with the Olympics, which she added by stating that thefts would increase if tourists were targeted by thieves. She concluded that the revenue generated by the Olympic Games will only cover the costs of organizing the event and that this only matters to the organizations and individuals involved in the event (C Phang 2013, interview, October 11).
