  • Essay / What is a paratext? - 2512

A frame is to a painting as a book cover is to a book and a title sequence is to a film in that they are all paratextual parergons. These works are editable, sometimes having no relation to the text, painting or film they surround, but they cannot be removed because they become an integral part of the work. A paratext is something that was created for a work, but not by the original author of that work. These are also pieces that accessorize a main work, otherwise called perergon. These paratexts might not be entirely necessary, although without them some elements of the works might be lost. A painting without a frame would still be a painting, the same goes for a book and a film. Picture frames and book covers do not stand on their own, there is little reason for a book or frame other than the work it encompasses. Artists and designers strive to make beautiful objects out of them, and many times they are known as that in some way, making them ineffective in their purpose. Each paratext is similar and different from each other in many ways. What ties them together is that they are all parergons. Technically, a book cover is not necessary at all and could be considered excessive ornamentation, much like what a frame is for a painting. A book without a cover remains the same book, just as a painting remains a painting without its frame. On the other hand, a film needs its title sequence for legal reasons, which is the main reason for its appearance at the beginning of the film. The main differences between a book cover and a frame are that a frame does not completely cover the work and is seen by the viewer with the painting, thus adding a visual aesthetic to the middle of the paper.... ..the artist would create the painting knowing where it would be placed within the architectural foundations of the church. However, a book cover is almost always created after the text has been written, making them two completely separate objects that are only forced to sit together because of the book's binding. In a way, this means that a book cover is an essential accessory. Otherwise known as parergon. Work incidental to a main work. Any ancient statue depicting a person is also a great example. Many Roman and Greek statues use draperies over the entire body of their statues. The drapery of a statue is an example of parergon. The drapery is not an integral part of the statue. The integral part being the actual body of the statue, it is the torso, the arms, the face and the legs. The drapery is only an added ornamentation framing the body of the statue.
