    If we do not have the ability to control what we think, what we do, or even what we say, then, according to Orwell , we cannot remain “human”. However, according to Winston, remaining human was possible. There were ways for a person to avoid falling into the clutches of the Party. In 1984, Winston said: “'They can't get inside you. If you can feel that remaining human is worth while, even if it can have no results, you have beaten them” (Orwell, p. 166). Winston is one of the only people who believes that there is still hope for the world. He wholeheartedly believes that there is a way to defeat the Party; that there is a way to survive and retain everything that makes someone human. In 1984, free will and free thought were extremely difficult to obtain. The Party controlled everything its citizens were exposed to. They controlled the past, present and future.
