  • Essay / The Adventures of Curzon in Chains by Laurie Halse...

Phrases: Sentence #1: Curzon makes his first appearance as a true risk-taker when he shows up when Grandpa calls and he answers : “I say that I am American. Curzon said: “An American soldier” (p. 164). Sentence #2: Curzon is an American slave in an American family. Midway through the book, he becomes an American soldier because “Master Bellingham promised me the freedom to enlist in his place” (p. 166). Sentence #3: [TOPIC SENTENCE 1] At the beginning of the book, Curzon offers to take Isabel to the tea water pump. This is the first minor risk Curzon takes in the book. At first we would view him as any other slave, just like Isabel, but we later find out that he is treated a little differently than Isabel and Ruth. Later we learn that Curzon has a lot of freedoms in his family, but we didn't know when he interrupted Master Bellingham and Mrs. Lockton by saying, "I'll take her away, sir." Lockton turned around. The boy had taken off his red hat and bowed politely” (p. 34). Sentence #4: [TOPIC SENTENCE 2] Another example of Curzon taking risks and paying for his freedom was when he became an American soldier. This is a huge risk because by becoming a soldier, he is risking his life and safety. We read that Isabel doesn't see any difference in him at first, but then says, "Those were his clothes." When I first met him, he was dressed like a rich man's servant, which he was. Now the tailored vest was gone and his shirt was dirty with sweat and mud. It hung above a pair of workman's breeches cut below the knee. He wore neither stockings nor shoes. Even his fancy red was speckled with mud” (p. 165). This quote explains how Isabel describes him as a soldier, all dressed up...... middle of paper ...... risk taker, as he takes a lot of risks throughout the book. Early in the book, Curzon offers to take Isabel, the new girl, to the tea water pump to get water for her new owners. Also, in the middle of the book, we read that Curzon has become a soldier, which endangers everything Curzon had in his possession at that time. The latest example of Curzon taking a huge risk and paying for his freedom is when he did not fight for his safety and comfort. His cellmates treated him differently because he was a black slave, and so they did not give him his blanket, food, or any other comforting thing he might need to survive the cold of winter and the raging fever. Curzon may not have changed much during his adventures, but he gained more experience and memories and he definitely paid a huge price for his personal comfort and future freedom..
