Music censorship has taken many forms in the past, but many forms are authoritarian and usually ridiculous. Censorship takes many forms. The practice of censorship is defined as "...the act of modifying or suppressing speech or writing considered subversive to the common good" (Merriam-Webster). Older forms of censorship included banning distribution, refusal of sale, and refusal of publication. The main problem faced by those who oppose censorship is that they have no real reason to approach the problem in a reasonable manner. However, censorship mainly focuses on younger music genres such as metal, punk and especially rap. The structure and practice of censoring "offensive" lyrics in the middle of a song comes in different flavors and varieties. Most modern censorship efforts are less intrusive than older methods of suppressing "vulgar" speech. Although most cases of these covers are more egregious, a list of them can easily be compiled by listening to free and open radio sources.
