In recent years, a small piece of fabric has managed to cause a sensation. The headscarf, or hijab, worn by Muslim women on their heads is making headlines around the world. The hijab is banned in French public schools and other European countries have adopted or are considering similar legislation. In Australia, a radio presenter sparked both debate and outrage by calling for a ban on face veils (niqab) in banks and post offices. In Canada, on the other hand, it is allowed to wear it freely, except in places like airports, for security reasons. Even some Muslim countries like Turkey and Tunisia ban the hijab in certain government buildings. When a small piece of fabric causes so much controversy and conflict, wouldn't it be easier to remove it? Why then, in such circumstances, do Muslim women wear headscarves? There are many different views on Muslim clothing choice, particularly the wearing of the veil. “I wear it thinking it’s necessary, but someone else might wear it thinking she’s doing something more,” Hamna Ahmed said. One of the many reasons why a Muslim may wear the veil also lies in their own personal decisions. Hamna has worn it for seven years now, even though her mother and three of her four sisters are not covered. Socially, this causes a problem with the meaning of the veil and conflict with other groups. With many different understandings of religion, what it means, what is considered practicing and what is not can lead to negative misunderstandings. Using many of the solutions listed previously and a better understanding of religion and the individual can lead us to achieve social control. How we come to interpret these issues is influenced by society and often leads to mistreatment.
