  • Essay / My interview with our school psychologist - 709

I had the opportunity to speak with the school psychologists on our campus. She currently has a master's degree in psychology and has worked for the district for 10 years now, including 3 years at this location. Discussing what she does regularly, she explained how she reaches out to contacts within the community to help parents and children with unresolved issues to help them find answers. She creates activities that help foster a better lifestyle for these families. I spoke with her at length about these events and she described them as a social environment conducive to a better quality of learning, social interaction and family lifestyle. The reason for scheduling these events on our campus is due to the low demographics and the campus being considered a special class of schools known as Title 1 that receives more aid than other campuses. When asked about her daily routine, she explained that when someone notices abnormal behavior, she calls students to her office to speak with them and find out what is going on. She then works with the social worker, school resource officer, administration and parents to resolve these issues. This is where the majority of his time is spent, with a small portion devoted to community events. By observing him for a few hours of my day, we were able to deal with student issues ranging from young teenagers with social issues (boyfriend/girlfriend) to students with difficult home lives and in need of help. Another area she touches on a bit is helping pregnant teens prepare for motherhood and the responsibilities associated with raising a child. In the 2012-2013 school year, there were more than 8 teenagers......mid-course......fulfilling the requirements for the master's degree. I have been researching other positions within our school board that require the degree I am about to obtain. Although I was unable to find a comparable position within our school district, there may be other positions in other counties or with outside employers that may need to be filled . Some of the positions I sent resumes to that had openings included state children's correctional facilities, behavioral health facilities, other school districts in neighboring counties, and private employers. The downside to job hunting is that my wife and I have our entire family here locally, so moving will be the very last option for us. Ideally, the best option would be for me to interview and take a position within our district where I am established and known not only to the supervisors but also to the students I serve..
