  • Essay / Persuasive Essay on Corporal Punishment - 1012

Children seem to misbehave more because there are not as many consequences as in years past. Teachers are no longer as respected as they used to be since they no longer have the strength to control the classroom as they did in the past. Vockell gives an excellent example of the usefulness of corporal punishment: "the punishment is very clear if the teacher gives detention for three days, the child and the teacher must remain upset the whole time, as if corporal punishment were used, they would. and it is finished” (278). By using corporal punishment, students would realize the consequences that the actions they display would affect their learning experience. This would teach them to respect the people who teach them and who later lead them. As more states move away from the use of corporal punishment as an effective means of teaching discipline and respect for authority, the problems will multiply. Without resorting to corporal punishment, a child may believe that using horrible language is a good thing to practice later in life. Then when I talk to a CEO, I find out it's not because they're not getting calls about the position. Without giving children proper consequences for their actions, they will never respect the authority they encounter later in life.
