Healthy People 2020 is a health promotion program that aims to improve the health, well-being and longevity of the nation by 2020. This paper will focus on goals of Healthy People 2020, how they will impact the families of people with mental health conditions and those at risk of harm due to violence. It will further discuss the potential barriers that exist between promoting these goals and the interventions that nurses can use to achieve them. Healthy People 2020 Goals It is very important for Americans to be proactive with their health and pursue a healthy lifestyle. Americans suffer from many health problems such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, liver disease, mental disorders, and substance abuse. What is important to understand is that many of these diseases are preventable or their onset can be delayed and health risks can be reduced through the use of preventive services. Healthy People 2020 is a national health promotion that aims to help individuals improve their health and increase their longevity by improving infrastructure, expanding preventive services, and promoting education and awareness. Although we are all human, our ethnic and racial differences can put us at higher risk. for different diseases and conditions. For example, “Hispanic Americans are reported to have higher rates of obesity, high blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, dyslipidemia, and diabetes” (Allison et al., 2008, p. 962). Healthy People 2020 can help reduce health care disparities among Americans. If a patient continues to demonstrate aggression or violence, we call a "code gray" to indicate to security that we need help with a combative patient and a danger to themselves or others. In some cases, we are required to place a patient in four points of restraint until they are able to calm down and no longer pose a threat to others. In conclusion, Healthy People 2020 as part of a national promotion that all nurses should support and contribute by working hard to educate, encourage and provide excellent care to their patients. This will help our country live longer, healthier lives and achieve health equality and eliminate disparities among all groups..
