    Does anyone want to experience something that is the leading cause of death in people under 44? Would anyone want to go through multiple stages of rehabilitation following just one small mistake they made while playing for their high school football team? Brain injuries are currently a big controversy in society, but understanding why they are so common in youth sports, some statistics and what they are, as well as their treatment, will change the perception some people have towards them. wounds in the world we live in today is a necessity. What most people don't realize is how often brain injuries occur. Head injuries are the leading cause of death among people under the age of 44. Head injuries occur every 21 seconds. The exact number of head injuries annually is difficult to determine, but an estimated 1.5 million people suffer from them. Nearly 5.3 million people have to live with disability due to brain damage. These injuries not only include massive collisions, such as car accidents, but also small things like youth sports accidents (Keller). A brain injury can be as simple as a bruise on the brain, called a contusion. These cause headaches and tender-to-touch areas of the head. A concussion is a little worse than a bruise. There are different severities of a concussion. More than a million people suffer a minor concussion each year (Keller). Symptoms of a concussion include headaches, blurred vision, memory loss, feeling slowed down or dizzy, and new emotions. There are so many symptoms of a concussion that it can be difficult to tell whether you actually have one or not. Instead of making brain injuries such a big controversy in our world, we should all just be a little more informed about them.
