    Oedipus, from the play Oedipus the King, is a completely singular character whose different aspects are revealed throughout the play. As he speaks with characters such as Creon, Jocasta, and Teiresias, we get a well-painted portrait of aspects of Oedipus' character. The ambitious aspect of Oedipus' character is revealed through his conversations with the conductor and chorus. When the conductor intervenes at the beginning of the play to offer suggestions, Oedipus readily accepts; he asks no one to “hold back” (323) and for everyone to simply tell all the information they have about Laius’s murder. Oedipus is very open to suggestions from leaders. He promises the citizens of his city, Chorus, that he will find the murderer of King Laius. Oedipus is ambitious, but sometimes he is also very arrogant. Arrogance is shown when Oedipus speaks to Creon. Oedipus “finds [Creon] a threat [and] a great burden” (612). With his “bad manner of speaking” (610), Oedipus accuses Creon of plotting to have Oedipus killed or banished from his kingdom so that he could rule in Oedipus' place. Creon tries to ...
