Essay / Battle of Gen X and Millennials - 1383
The Battle of Gen age diversity. Many organizations have finally figured out how to recruit young talent, only to have them compete with seasoned employees on issues such as work ethic, respect for authority, dress code, and every work arrangement imaginable. And they don't know what to do. With this article, I decided to embrace this concept because of the people I have to work with all the time. It's usually Gen Then they need to ask themselves, “Why do I need to learn this anyway?” » I sit back, smile, and think to myself, there must be an easier way to open up the information superhighway to people, no matter what the situation. age. Good communication skills are essential to getting a message across and often our verbal and written messages are not received and interpreted as intended. This is why I chose to focus on Generations X and YI first had to define what a generation is. A generation, loosely defined, is a group of people who can be identified demographically by biological tendencies and who have shared experiences (Stephens Generation X website, 2004). I first did some research on Generation Y babies (1980-1994). These young adults are in a league of their own. This generation has a hopeful outlook, a determined work ethic, and is put off by promiscuity (Mcai-mn.org, 2004). This generation also likes a direct communication approach. They have a global perspective, and this may be due to the pace of technological evolution over the past twenty years which favors barrier-free communication. When we look at this group more closely, they are able to adapt quickly, constantly innovate, accept others easily, and bounce back quickly. They have the time, tools and talent to create a better world and better results. Now, these Generation Xers also have their own little quirks! They were raised on television, Atari 2600s and personal computers. This is the generation that was raised in the 1970s and 1980s, and saw this country endure a...... middle of paper...... 30 years. Considering that the average starting salary for a college graduate in 2000 hovered around $38,000, as more organizations look for ways to adapt schedules, work locations and job descriptions, the Millennials are perhaps more realistic than those who make fun of their ambition. I haven't yet found out if it worked or not. I hope that's the case, because while researching this topic, it made me realize what I was expecting. I need to place more emphasis on asking people what they want instead of imposing my own biases about what I think they want. Reference page Official online site of Business Week.
