Essay / Deforestation Essay - 875
Nowadays, the Earth is facing a series of serious environmental problems that require urgent attention to make ecology friendly, and global warming is considered the most vital. Although some people doubt or dispute the existence of global warming, climate change is real and is primarily influenced by human activities through the increased production of greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide. Global warming has the effect of melting polar ice caps and glaciers, which will cause sea levels to rise. Additionally, due to sea level rise, the survival of populations living on the islands and coastal cities may be threatened in the long term. Deforestation is considered one of the main factors contributing to global climate change. Additionally, since trees absorb greenhouse gases, reduce carbon emissions and produce oxygen, without trees the greenhouse effect can be significantly enhanced. As the World Resources Institute points out in its data, forest loss contributes 12 to 17 percent of annual global greenhouse gas emissions. So, what is “deforestation”? Why do people have to deforest? How does it affect the environment? By definition, deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order to make land available for other uses. Such as converting forest lands to farms, ranches and urban use. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reported that about 18 million acres of forest disappear each year and about half of the planet's rainforests have been cleared. Also, according to Bastien Sachet, "...tropical deforestation is responsible for around 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions...Each year, 13 million hectares of the world'...... middle of paper.. ....e intensively, such as high-yielding hybrid crops. These methods often rely on chemical inputs to maintain the necessary yields. Additionally, in many parts of the world, particularly in East Asian countries, reforestation and afforestation are increasing the area of forested land. We know that deforestation can lead to a decline in biodiversity and land degradation. As John Donne said: “No man is an island unto himself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the continent”, not only are governments supposed to be responsible for deforestation, but individuals must also take responsibility. There are some things we can do to improve the situation. For example, we can refuse to use disposable chopsticks and buy wooden furniture, reduce paper use by printing less, and educate others to cherish forest resources..
