Essay / Animal Farm: Mollie Symbolism - 1303
“Complex political positions and events can be represented by something seemingly simple or small. Ideas can be transmitted in the same way. This is done using symbols. George Orwell, the author of Animal Farm, used symbolism to create a novel about a simple farm run by animals that also represents the Russian Revolution of 1917. His use of symbolism was so detailed; each action represented the importance of the revolution, and each character represented an important person of the revolution, such as the color red symbolizing the European Revolution since 1789 and the beauty of Russia. In Animal Farm, Mollie, "the pretty, stupid white mare who set Mr. Jones' trap" (P. 5) symbolizes the upper middle class of Petrograd, especially women. There is ample evidence that Mollie represents the female upper-middle class of Petrograd. -middle class of Petrograd. For example: the color red. This was mentioned several times and was usually only used when Mollie was involved. Red was a very popular symbol between the 1800s and 1900s. According to lesson four, Symbols, Songs, and the Revolution, "The people of Petrograd wore red ribbons or armbands...Red ribbons were given to the Cossacks to tie to the manes and tails of their horses. » The phrase "red ribbons" was very catchy because Orwell very specifically mentions Mollie's red ribbons. Including, at the very beginning of the book where Mollie attends the old major's speech, “At the last moment, Mollie, the pretty, stupid white mare who sprung Mr. Jones' trap, came in delicately, chewing a lump of sugar. She took her place near the front and began flirting with her white mane, hoping to draw attention to the red ribbons with which it was braided” (P. 5-6). As the book progresses, the reader shows himself as a man. .... middle of paper ......traits-mollie-282969>.History.com. Np, and Web. November 21, 2013. .LitCharts. Np, and Web.
