Essay / Teaching All Children About Nutrition by Jamie Oliver - 1360
America is at its 'tipping point,' passionate chefs say. (Oliver, 2010, para 8) Over the past few decades, food has taken a drastic plunge toward unfamiliar ingredients and chemicals. Most in society would agree that children are the future, but startling statistics make this hard to believe; they cannot become the future if they are fed to death. Jamie Oliver and Ann Cooper are two of the many chefs working hard to educate people about real food. The lectures given by each of them send the overall message that the future of humanity lies in the food we eat. Jamie Oliver's 2010 lecture, “Teaching Every Child About Diet,” opens with the frightening truth that Americans are promoting to themselves: “Diet-related illnesses are the biggest cause mortality in the United States. » It is said that children today will live ten years less than their parents because of the food they eat. Oliver goes on to share the statistic that in ten years this country will spend approximately $300 billion a year on obesity costs. Information like this proves that money is being spent on all the wrong things. Ann Cooper's similar lecture, "What's Wrong with School Lunches," given in 2007, takes a strong stance against the USDA (the United States Department of Agriculture) and which they call food. Cooper suggests to listeners that the USDA does not have their best interests at heart; claiming a problem of social injustice among them. In 2014, the USDA has approximately $146 billion to spend on programs such as nutrition assistance, agricultural commodities, food security and more. Given the statistics provided by Oliver, approximately less than half of the money spent on the costs of obesity is spent on food... middle of paper ...... opt for nutritious foods that don't don't give body need dietary aids. Money spent on fast food should be returned to schools to produce real food for children. Overall, society should teach itself how to cook, learn the importance of food and save humanity. The longer society takes to realize its mistakes, the worse the situation will become. Every day, more and more children cast a larger shadow over their lifespan without having the knowledge to improve it. Overall, society needs to come together before it is too late. www.obpa.usda.gov/budsum/FY14budsum.pdf http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/27/pink-slime-fast-food_n_1237206.html http://www.merriam-webster.com/ dictionary/fast food
