Essay / Design and Art by Alex Coles - 813
In this text, three essays taken from the compilation “Design and Art” by Alex Coles are analyzed or commented on. These three essays seek to explain a clear definition of the word design and then connect/separate design, giving details about the function and goals of design and determining the motto and characteristics of art. What is design? (Vilem Flusser, 1993)According to Charles Eames, design is the arrangement of elements that accomplish a particular objective. Design is an expression of purpose, which could later be considered art. Design is not a profession with an industrial vocation, although it can constitute a solution to industrial problems. Its limits are defined by the limits of the problems addressed. Design is not only concerned with one part of the environment and it is not a general method of expression, it is a method of action. Design is often the creation of a group, as designers must always acknowledge the influence of those who came before them. Design involves the idea of useful products, even though their use can be very subtle. Some designs are industrially manufactured and some are not, it depends on the nature of the design and requirements. Design depends on constraints, a sum of constraints. A good designer is willing and enthusiastic to work within these constraints. Some needs are ephemeral, so are certain designs. Only designs that have a more universal quality will tend toward permanence, since design speaks to need, not to an individual or a mass. About the Word Design (Charles Eames, 1972) In the essay “About the Word Design” by Vilem Flusser, the author begins to break down the word design and begins to explain its origins. By doing this one ultimately becomes... middle of paper... design in art" and it is here that one can arrive at the point of whether design is the same as art For many, including myself, the answer to this question is: NO Art as mentioned above seeks to express ideas and communicate through beauty but lacks linear processes and does not seek resolution. anything, nor to seek an audience, but only to please the artist and express the desire to convey something. Design, however, seeks to solve problems of a particular type, to persuade and communicate. , even a design can manage to express ideas but not always those of the designer The results are due to design techniques and processes that are missing These two words are synonymous to many but in reality, it is an idea art. fake created by the public who, historically, sought design solutions in art and artistic solutions in a design.
